Conviction...
Is a treasure for whoever is convinced
But we are...
Built to be greedy
I am trying to fall in love, then I stop...
I am trying but I can't figure it out
I am trying to follow my brain
And what's logic dictates on me
I am trying but I can't figure it all out

You either think or feel
You can't be in between
You can not have it all
You have to choose only one thing of everything

Every individual is incomplete
No matter how perfect s/he looked
For sure s/he wants a lot of things
Things that you have and you take it for granted

Nobody have it all in life
No matter how much we deserve it
But sometimes, it oppresses us
Yet it's still fair

I've been walking for many years (Years are passing)

That was one of the hardest songs to translate :D
She talk in plural form, but in Arabic it could mean two things...She could be talking about many people such as friends or family. Also in Arabic we use plural form as a sign for respect for certain person such as prince, king, or maybe a lover.

The song is full of figure speeches, the title it self is a figure speech...She doesn't mean that she is walking for many years literally, it's a figure speech for years are passing.

Song name: Mesheet Seneen (I've been walking for many years)
Album: Qad Al Horoof
Song genre: Sharqi, Oriental, Belly Dance
Singer: Asalah, Assala, Asala -
Lyrics by: Al Nasser -
Composed by: Ya'aqoub Al Khobaizi -
Arranged by: Omar Abdulaziz -
Translated by: RADIANT GUY (ME)

I've been walking for many years...
While I was hiding my pain upon them...
For many years my soul was owned by them...
I've never longed to nobody except them...
And I never felt lonely while I was with them!

For my whole life I was trying to hide my agony upon them...
Because I didn't want them to suffer even by a breeze of air blowing on their eyes...
And now I regret it...
Because they betrayed our golden years together and forgot all about love in one second!

I and my heart are confused...
Although many years already passed yet we couldn't forget them...
I've hidden my tear because I didn't want them to see it...
I swallowed my sighs because I didn't want them to hear it!

I've been walking for many years...
While I was hiding my pain upon them...
For many years my soul was owned by them...
I've never longed to nobody except them...
And I never felt lonely while I was with them!

I hated you!

OK, that's one of the hardest songs I ever translated, it's might sound stupid or meaningless because it's was translated, and I believe that poetry loses it's power when it's translated.

Anyway this song was a massive hit in the year 1999 and Latifa (the performer) won many awards because of it, prince of Dubai Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoom wrote a reply to the lyrics and dedicated it to Latifa!
The song about when you love someone and later you find out that he was acting that he or she loves you.
A mix of Rock guitar with Arab instrument "Mizwid", just amazing.
There was a rumor that this song based on a true story (Obviously a very bad love story) Latifa been through.
Song name: Kerihtak (I hated you) - كرهتك
Album: Wadeh (In the Arab world) aka Inchallah (Internationally) 1999 -
Song genre: Rock/Arab pop/FolkloreSinger: Latifa -
Lyrics by: Mansoor Al Shadi -
Composed by: Salah Al Sharnoobi -
Arranged by: Raymond GimenesTranslated by: RADIANT GUY (ME)

Your love is false, you have no conscience...
Yes I loved you, I adored you and now I hated you!
I hated you because you are just a mask and a play starring with agony!

You are a lie in the shape of an angel...
For many years and nights my life was devoted to you...
I am writing the story of your love with my tears while you are wiping it off with a pen's stroke!

You successfully won the bet of your friends...
And my love story became a joke which you shared with them...
Go and laugh with them until the morning and may God help me!

You've entered my life by a mistake...
You are just a selfish person and that's why I hated you without compromise...
Oh God, you are the compensation and the judge!
Your love is false, you have no conscience...
Yes I loved you, I adored you and now I hated you!
I hated you because you are just a mask and a play starring with agony!

Latifa perorming "Mawwal"

Introduce me to her!

That song reminds me of 2003 Summer time, I listened (and still listening) to it probably 10 zillion times...There is a music instrument which sounds like a violin but it's not a violin, it's really amazing. I think it's one of the best songs by Angham, I love her songs and style but there are some songs that you love more than others.
A remix of the song released in the CD, didn't released in the cassette.

Song name: Arrafha Beya (Arabic script: عرفها بيا) - Introduce me to her!
Singer: Angham -
Song genre: Arab pop music / slow
Album: Omri Ma'ak (2003)

Lyrics by: Essam Hosny
Translated by: Bashar Al-Ba'noon (aka radiant guy) radiantguy.com
Composed by: Tamer Ali
Arranged by: Fahad

Why did you remain silent?
Tell her!
What's going on between us!
Why you didn't tell her about our love story?
Introduce me to her!
Answer me!
Or let me tell her everything and she will be the judge!

Deny my existence to her!
Swear to her that our love is over!
Fool her and tell her...
That your life belongs to her...
That her smile cured your wounds!

Tell her everything you told me!
Every single word you told me!
That you truly feel comfortable with me...
That you've owned the world and the universe the day you knew her!
That's you will belong to nobody except her!

Introduce me to her!
Answer me!
Or let me tell her everything and she will be the judge!

From now on

Amazing song by Laila Ghofran, it's true she is been singing forever yet she is not popular although she have a great voice (according to me). That song reminds me of my trip to Bahrain in November 2006, we had a road trip and I played it constantly. My friends now hate that song because of me LOL

You've taught me...
Not to say a love world again!
To tell people in love break a part to make your lover suffer!
And when someone fall in love with me...
I will be selfish and get revenge in him!
From now on... I will love no body!
From now on... Safeness does not exists and I will not believe my beloved ones anymore!
After knowing you, I became a different person...
I will never be weak even for one second!
From now on... I forgot all about your love, I will not long to you nor keep a single memory!
From now on... I will think only about my future!

You've told me the greatest love words in the universe...
You made me dream about our upcoming life together...
A day after day I loved you more...
And that was all illusion and manipulation!

My lifetime

Usually when I listen to any album for the first time, I always get stick with a specific song in the album. "Hayati" (My lifetime) was that song in Latifa's 2007 album (Ma'alomat Akeeda), it doesn't mean that it's the best song in the album but for some reason slow songs atracts me. It kinda remind me of her 1993 song Beyihsibooni (بيحسبوني) they thought; which I totally loved at the time and still loving it.
Recently I used that song as a background song for my first video clip uploaded on google video, It's embed below :)

My lifetime just begun...
Before knowing you it was ordinary...
I never noticed what's going on nor felt anything around me....
Now I found someone who really care about me
My life was changed when I met you...
Come closer to my heart and always keep it that way...
Let me see the world through your eyes and live my dreams
Promise me when I need you; I'll always find you with me...
and I swear that I will belong only to you..
I've been through a lot before knowing you...
I don't want to live in grief anymore

Your love is everything to me...
I used to be afraid but not anymore...
You're love made me feel something I never felt before
My darling I feel my heart is safe with you...
My heart is happy and I feel you... It can't hide my feelings anymore
and tells me that I love you
My life was changed when I met you...
Come closer to my heart...
Let me see the world through your eyes and live my dreams

Distinct groups of Arab Music Genres

Once upon the time, I had a comment on one of my blogs from an American teacher requesting some Arab songs (specificlly folklore songs) for his students. I already know stuff about it but I thought to google it, I found nothing except short (mostley meaningless) comments in some forums. That's why I decided to blog some of what I know about it.

Almost all of Arab illegal music sites catogorize Arabic music into 4 or 5 distinct groups according to the singer's origin.
That could be great If you already know the singers nationalities but that would be totally meaningless If you know nothing about Arab music genres or singers.

Contemprary Arabic music could be catogorized into distinict groups according to the song's dialect or song's genre.

These names are not official but I will use them in my posts labels/tags.

Each group below consists of sub genres, I will not mention them all because I am not a music expert. I just wrote the ones below to let you know some basic information of contemporary Music in the Arab world.

Note. I will keep updating this post every now and then.

1. Grouping according to dialects

"Khaleeji" literally means "Gulfic" and it refers to music from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman .
Examples of "Khaleeji" music genres: "Samri", "Bahri", "Ekhbaiti", "Emrobi'e", "Classic"...Etc
Sometimes people includes Iraq and Yemen to "Khaleeji".

"Shami" and it refers to music from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Example of "Shami" music genre: "Dabkah".
Sometimes people includes Iraq to "Shami".

"Iraqi" music, Personally I consider Iraqi music a separate group because they have their own unique dialect, rhythms and music instruments.

"Sharqi" and it refers to music from Egypt. Most of other Arab genres are heavily influenced with "Sharqi" music.
Example of "Sharqi" music genre: "Maqsoom".

"Magharibi" and it refers to music from Lybia, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Mauritania. Example of "Magharibi" music genre: "Rai" or "Raï".

2. Grouping according to music genres

ARAB POP MUSIC
This kind of music started in the 1980s by many Arab singers such As Latifa, Samira Said, Amr Diab and Raghib Allamah.
It's a mix of Arab and world's instruments, rhythms and beats.
Examples:

"Ma Etrohsh Ba'ed" (Don't go away) by Latifa (لطيفة)
"Wallahi Ma Tahaddi" (I swear I am not challenging) by Asalah (أصالة)
"Laily" (My night) by Dania (دانية)
"Shofto Be Aini" (I saw him with my own eyes) by Latifa (لطيفة) a mix of Disco and Oriental rhythms.

TARAB
ARAB TARAB was popular in the 1980s and earlier, this kind of songs are rarely performed by singers these days.
Tarab songs needs singers with powerful voices to perform them, they usually arranged using Arab Instruments only.
The Tarab songs usually have a long length, more than 10 minutes...Singers uses TARAB to show off their voices, they keep repeating the exact phrases differently each times.
Currently Asalah is the only one who perform this kind of genres (she perform the others genres too).

Example of "Khaleeji Tarab" music:
"Yis'ed Sabahak" (Good morning) by Asalah (أصالة)

SLOW MUSIC
It's a great way to deliver the feelings in the lyrics no matter what kind of feelings...
Despair, Romance, Melancholy, Longing, Missing...Etc
This is not an exclusive Arab Genre, but it's sometimes they mix it with Arab Instruments and that adds the Arab touch.

Examples of slow music:

"Inta Meen?" (Who are you?) by Angham (انغام)
"Betohashni" (I miss you) by Sherine (شيرين)
"Kefak?" (How are you?) by Baha'a (بهاء)
"Akdib" (I am lying) by Diana Haddad (ديانا حداد)
"Law Bassait Qoddamak" (If you looked in front of you) by Elissa (اليسا)

ORIENTAL "SHARQI" RHYTHMS (aka BELLY DANCE)
Known in the Arab world and Turkey, using Arab/Turkish rhythms with Arab and non Arab Instruments.

Examples of Sharqi rhythms:
"Ehlifli" (He promised) by Diana Haddad (ديانا حداد) with fast tempo
"Fe Gheyabak Anni" (During your absence) by Latifa (لطيفة) with slow tempo

KHALEEJI MUSIC
Khaleeji music is a music genre which consists of sub genres, the are used in six Arab states and they are (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman).

Samri, Ekhbaiti, Emroba'a, Bahri, Classic...Etc

Example of Samri music:

"Wainik Inta?" (Where are you?) by "Thekra or Zekra or Zikra" (ذكرى)

A crying door!

Music video of the song is very sad, about when someone lose his mother.
It begins with a different song, going out with his wife...But later it becomes dramatic and melancholic :(

Note. I wanted to add the full translation of this song but I don't really get every single Lebanese word :+

Singer: "Assi Al Hellani"
Song: "Bab Am Yibki"

She left and took my happiness with her...
Even didn't leave me one smile...
The stairs were chocked and the door was crying!
Have you ever seen a crying door?

Don't test my tolerance!

Nora didn't release a new album for so long...I watched the music video of the song, very dramatic...The guy was treating her badly, he locked her in the house and leave...She couldn't get out of the house so she burn the house while she is in!
Currently I am addicted to two songs in the album, the other one called "Athib Qalbi" (Translation: Torture my heart).

Here is the music video with English subtitles uploaded on Google video by me:

Don't test my tolerance...Because everything have a limit including tolerance
I can control my heart...Listen to me carefully:
I can tolerate your betrayal...
I can tolerate your absence...
But I can't tolerate being wounded by you!
La Laaa La La Laaaaa
La Laaa La La Laaaaa

My heart is a book of words, people such as you have a hard time to read it...
Not everyone with a typical vision can really see, you should feel it...
My nights are sleepless...
My eyelashes are wet with tears...
How many times shall I keep repeating that?
I am bored of it!
La Laaa La La Laaaaa
La Laaa La La Laaaaa

I saw him with my own eyes

The music video of the song was released on 30th of January 2007, I loved the stage it looks gigantic :D
The song "Shofto Be Aini" (Translation: I saw him with my own eyes) released in Latifa's latest album and this is my first review of the album's songs.
If you like Latifa's hit "Ma Etrohsh Ba'ed" (Translation: Don't go away) then definitely you will love this song!
I just uploaded the music video on Google video and added English subtitles on it (VIVA GOOGLE!).I never done that before and I am excited about it ;)
The music video was directed by Said Al Marouq, it looks futuristic; you can notice it from Latifa's hair, her dress and the people around her who were acting as robots.

I will write the lyrics in both Arabic script with English translation, some people requested it.
Note. you can use the photo above as a 1280*768 wallpaper, if you need it in 1024*768 & 800*600 check the wallpapers section in Latifa's official site (Latifaonline.net)

I saw him with my eyes...

He feels the way I feel...

He is in love and I can see that through his eyes...

My heart told me all about it...

I think I will go to him and reveal my love to him...

He have been counting the days until we meet again

I love him as much as he love me...

I am definite that my love have reached him by now

If he came to me, I will tell him; I will not hide my feelings anymore

Tell me "I love you" and make my life more beautiful...

I love you every second of my life...

I can hear you, tell me I love you one more time

Am I dreaming or is this a reality?

My heart is longing to you find a way to comfort it...

I want to reach you in a minute...

Is there enough room for me in your heart?

That's when I found out that he is a great liar...
He always promise but never keep his promises, he only fall in love for very few days then he forget all about his love!

Don't go away..

Latifa won the best middle eastern singer in the World Music Awards 2004 for that album. It's was a smash hit in the Arab world.
This song is a great example of Arab Pop Music, you can listen to Arab instruments such as Tabla along with Techno beats, she perform a short part with Arab rhythms in the song.

The song was performed in three different languages!

The first time in the year 2001 by the Greek singer "Despina Vandi", the song's name is "Ah Kardoula Mou".
In the year 2003 the song's music was recomposed and rearranged (legally) and released in Arabic language by "Latifa", the song's name is "Ma Etrohsh Ba'ed" (Don't go away).
"Havas" is the name of the Persian version, released in 2005...It's a remix of the Arabic version performed by the Persian singer "Shohreh Solati"; that one wasn't legal.

Despite it's legal or not, I think it's a great way that people around the world can share the exact passion of Music, I know it's took two years for each version to reach others and I really wish if there is a faster way so everybody can listen to the latest songs in all over the world in the exact released date.

Don't go away..

The photo above is my graphics work of Latifa performing the song in the World Music Awards 2004 also you might notice her photo with Celine Dion.
Latifa's speech was censored by the USA media when she said "My happiness remains incomplete until Iraq & Palestine are freed"!

My love, I need you beside me
My love, come closer to me...Come closer

For many starry nights I’ve been living imagining you in my fantasies...
Before seeing you my precious I kept thinking of you every awaking moment

My love, while you are beside me all my life is full of love; your love is the most valuable to me.
With every night your words were on my mind, you are the life in my eyes and the world to my heart.

Dear starry nights he finally told me that I am the love of his life
SIGH

The years of my life passed before knowing you and no one has replaced you ever
All I need is your heart to be with me even for one second
It's enough for me to have you as my forever love in my heart
Love… Always stay with me and don’t go away

Never!

One of my very favorite songs of all times!
I think no matter how much I say that I love it, it's will never be enough to express the way I love it!
It's this kind of songs which you love everything about, Music, Lyrics, Arrangment and the singer performance.

The song released in the year 2002 (Arabic), I just found out that there is a Turkish version of it released in the year 2004...The Turkish song called "Hadi Git" and it was performed by "Seden Gürel".
It's happens a lot over her, sometimes Turkish use Arabic songs and sometimes Arabs takes Turkish music...Sometimes It's legally others not (It's was legal this time).

Song name: Benoub (Never)
Singer: Najwa Karam
Album: Tahamooni (2002)
Writer and composer: Marwan Khoury
Arranged by: Mohammed Mustafa
Translated by: Me

Never ever go away from me...
My eyes don't sleep because my beloved is coming tonight...
I wish we could find a medicine to cure my agony...
Time seems to pass at a slow pace with our date getting closer.

The evening wind as a signal of separation, It was blowing north while I sat by myself, Suddenly a warm breeze blew and reminded me of my beloved's smile!
O you sadness standing ready to stab my heart with your spears!

The night of mourning is over...
My beloved is coming back to live in (fill) my heart...
Life passes in an eye glance...
O darling, where are you? Come back to save my love!

The song

"AL GHENYWA" is a great song by Latifa, released in the year 1997 as a part two of her 1986 hit song "Akthar Min Roohi" (More than my soul).
Both songs are a mix of Arab instruments and Spanish Tango.

Album: Al Ghenwa (1997)
Song Genre: Tango
Singer: Latifa
Composer: Ammar Al Sherai'ei
Lyrics by: Abdulwahab Mohammed

The song that we use to hear when we’re together is still on my mind constantly.
It's always moves and touches me every time I hear it.
I wonder if it’s the same for you when you hear it, does it still effect u the same way?
Does it make u cry about the way we ended up? Or you will not even care?
Did you forgot all about it; did you forget all about me too?
Did you completely forget me and our song?
The song that said “ I love you more than myself, honestly I love you even more”.

Years past and life drifted us apart; look who you’re with now, and who I’m with.
But I’m still thinking of our days together, and the same song still comes on my mind constantly.
I wonder if it’s the same for you when you hear it, does it still effect u the same way?
Does it make u cry about the way we ended up? Or you will not even care?
Did you forgot all about it; did you forget all about me too?
Did you completely forget me and our song?
The song that said “ I love you more than myself, honestly I love you even more”

Are you crying about the way we ended up?
“ I love you more than myself, honestly I love you even more”

Are you crying about the way we ended up?
“ I love you more than myself, honestly I love you even more”

Are you crying about the way we ended up?
“ I love you more than myself, honestly I love you even more”

Are you crying about the way we ended up?

If you had a look

I think this is the first Arab Rock song ever!
Released in the year 2003, the song's style might be weird in the Arab world.

Album: Ma Etrohsh Ba'ed (2003)
Song genre: Rock/Arab Pop
Singer: Latifa
Writer: Abdulwahab Mohammed
Composer: Ziad Al Taweel

If you had a look in my eyes...
If you loved me just a little bit...
If you had feelings towards me the way I have towards you...
If you didn't act careless...
You will see the world differently!

If you were confused come to me...
If you felt like a fire burning you inside out; let me (extinguish it) deal with it...
If one day you were lost, just call me...
If you whispered to me...
I'll be with you in a second!

If you accepted me my dear...
If you became a part of my life...
If you belonged to me exclusively...
If you loved me as much as I love you...
I'll fulfill your life so you will not need anything from the outer world anymore!

I swear I am not challenging!

Finally Asalah's 2006 album released!
The album's title is "Hayati", very poetic song but I didn't really like it...
One of my favorite songs in the album called "Wallahi Ma Tahaddi" (Arabic for I swear I am not challenging).

Song name: Wallah Ma Tahaddi! (I swear I am not challenging!)
Singer: Asalah

Album: Hayati (2006)
Writte by: Hani Abdulkareem
Composed by: Waleed Sa'ad
Arranged by: Kareem Abdulwahab
Translated by: Bashar (me)

I swear I'm not challenging you nor wondering how will you live with out being with me..
I know that you'll need few days to get used to it and forget all about me!

I just feel bad when I see the "I feel sorry about you" look in your eyes!
It's doesn't really suites you!

That's it, you are leaving me and I am accepting this fact..
No body was ever killed by loneliness, I used to be lonely before meeting you!

So what If I felt bad about it?
I am a normal human being with feelings and a heart made of blood and flesh...
That's why I have all rights to be in pain!

No matter how many people in pain you meet; yet you will not find anybody in more pain than mine..
Even If I was dieing and I was longing to you...
I rather to die than letting you see me weak!

That's it, you are leaving me and I am accepting this fact..
No body was ever killed by loneliness, I used to be lonely before meeting you!

That's it, you are leaving me and I am accepting this fact..
No body was ever killed by loneliness, I used to be lonely before meeting you!

I don't care!

The word "Adi" have many meanings in English such as Normal, I don't care, so what? ..Etc released in Asalah's 2005, Personally I consider this song one of the greatest although many people didn't have a chance to listen to it or they had a bad first impression since the music arrangment was very new in the Arab world.

Song name: Adi (I don't care, so what?)
Song genre: Arab pop
Singer: Asalah
Album: Adi (2005)
Translated by: Bashar (me)

I don't care if we brake a part...
I don't care If I was wounded...
I don't care if I was forgotten...
I don't care if I was in pain...
I don't care if I was in regret...
I don't care if I was tortured...
I don't care about anything wether it was strange thing or not!

Even the one who I used to be in love with, and I thought that I have no life with out being with him...
It's was a matter of time, we have nothing left between us anymore...
And now I consider him a normal person like everybody else!

I am not afraid of my old memories any more because my upcoming future will make me forget my past...
I don't care If my loved person came closer or left away because nothing anymore makes me surprised!

I don't care if I was in pain...
I don't care if I was in regret...
I don't care if I was tortured...
I don't care about anything wether it was strange thing or not!

Laily (My Night)

This song originally released in the year 1999 in the album Dania II; The album contained many songs including two versions of this particular song, Oriental version and Trans-global underground mix…few years later 2 remixes of the song were released.
I truly love this song specially the trans-global underground mix and I think many people never listened to this great song.
It's a mix of Arab instruments and western instruments and beats; although the song's video was extremely simple but for sure it's express the song's arrangement with a brake dancer and the lute man.
F.Y.I. Lute is a musical instrument used widely in the Arab world and Turkey, it's kind a look like guitar.
In the year 2006 Best of Dania album released including renewed very old song called "Foq Al Nakhal" (Above the palms) and some remixes of Dania's songs.
The song name is "Laily", "Laili" or "Leily" letterly means (My night) but when someone say it I think it's means different thing, I am not really sure what does it mean exactly but I think it's means the sleepless nights of torment because the one we love is away, that's why I decided to keep the Laily part without translation.
